Building the Veggie Patch

So part of the reason we bought the house is because it has such a big lot. There’s lots of room for us to grow things, and to learn how to grow things. And I like creating things, so this land was a perfect blank slate we could start with.

Here’s what the yard looked like about 3 months after we moved in – we haven’t made any improvements yet at this point. This might have been the first time we mowed the lawn, it took a while to get a mower.

So in April 2012 we built the veggie patch. It was a group effort, my father did a lot of the machine work, and showed me how to use a drill.

First we started by roto-tilling and manually digging out the area.

And we roto-tilled a new flower bed at the same time.

Then we started building boxes on top of the ground. We dug down 8 inches, and raised up the sides 12 inches.

Then we ordered a huge pile of dirt – this is what 3 cubic yards of high quality dirt looks like. Next time we do something like this we know to put a tarp down first.

So what do we have here… boston lettuce, kale, beets, cherry tomatoes, calendula, strawberries and cucumbers.
